Which Is Better Short Or Long Form Content [Episode 46]

Digital Marketing Creators Podcast Episode 46

In Episode 46 we ask and attempt to answer the question:  So which is better – short or long-form content? The truth is, it depends on the context and the goals of the content. Both forms of content have their own unique benefits and drawbacks, and the best choice will depend on the specific needs of the content creator and the audience.

Personal Brand Coaching

On one hand, short form content – such as social media posts, articles, and videos that are under a few minutes in length – is often seen as more accessible, easy to consume, and able to hold the attention of readers and viewers in an increasingly cluttered and fast-paced world.

On the other hand, long form content – such as in-depth articles, reports, and videos that are over a few minutes in length – is often seen as providing more depth, nuance, and value to the reader or viewer.

One key benefit of short form content is that it is easy to consume and share. In today’s world, where people are constantly bombarded with information from various sources, it can be challenging to hold the attention of readers and viewers for long periods of time.

Short form content is able to capture and hold the attention of readers and viewers more effectively, as it is typically shorter and more focused in scope. This makes it easier for readers and viewers to quickly get the information they need and move on to the next thing.

Additionally, short form content is more likely to be shared on social media and other platforms, as it requires less time and commitment from the reader or viewer to consume.

However, short form content also has its limitations. Because it is shorter and more focused in scope, it may not be able to provide the depth and nuance that long form content can offer.

In some cases, the brevity of short form content can make it less effective at conveying complex ideas or information. Additionally, short form content may not be as effective at building a loyal audience, as it does not offer the same level of value and engagement as long form content.

Long form content, on the other hand, has the benefit of being able to provide more depth and nuance to a topic. Because it is longer and more in-depth, long form content is able to delve into a subject more thoroughly and provide more context and background information.

This can be particularly useful for topics that are complex or require a lot of explanation, as long form content can provide a more complete picture of the subject matter.

Additionally, long form content is more likely to be seen as valuable and worth the time and commitment required to consume it, which can help to build a loyal audience over time.

However, long-form content also has its own set of challenges. For one, it requires more time and commitment from the reader or viewer to consume. In today’s fast-paced world, it can be difficult to hold the attention of readers and viewers for long periods of time, especially if the content is not engaging or interesting.

Long-form content may not be as easily shareable on social media and other platforms, as it requires more time and commitment to consume.

The question of whether short or long-form content is better is not a simple one to answer. Both forms of content have their own unique benefits and drawbacks, and the best choice will depend on the specific needs of the content creator and the audience.

In general, short-form content is better for capturing and holding the attention of readers and viewers in a fast-paced world, while long-form content is better for providing depth and nuance to a topic. Ultimately, the best choice will depend on the specific goals and needs of the content creator and the audience.

As the content landscape continues to evolve, the question of whether short or long-form content is better is a topic that has garnered much attention and we discuss it here so TAKE A LISTEN!

I'll just put it to you this way. short form content is easier to make, it's easy to make, we're gonna I guess, compare, we're not going to compare anything, we're not going to compare anything today, we're just gonna just gonna get right into the content. But short form, video is just easy to make, you can just pull your phone out star recording, kind of just like then obviously, you want to plan your content, you want to make sure you do that you don't just want to press record and just start, I guess talking for the sake of talking you have to make sure you plan it is easier to make, you don't have to have all the bells and whistles, you don't have to have a bunch of extra things for like professional equipment.

Here's what I'm saying. You can pretty much use what you have, you can use the earbuds with the mic that comes with your smartphone and said if you have a brand new phone, or you can possibly purchase the earphones, or the microphone, there's a mic that's that's on the earphone. So that's why I say the earphone you can possibly purchase those are not that expensive, the videos are much easier to make, you can call the phone out, boom start recording, you can get some editing software, there's a bunch of free editing software. Out there, you have cap cut, and there's a few other ones also. But I like cap cut myself is easy to use. longer form content takes more time. And there's a lot of things that you need to know especially if you're doing long form content.

On a platform like YouTube, there's so many things that you need to know other than just pressing the record button and putting out content, there is a way that you have to engage the audience, there's a way you have to keep their attention. Because with the longer form content, well with both of them, it's about keeping, keeping those users on that particular platform. When you're doing longer form, there's a lot of different things that you have to do to keep people on the platform. If you're doing a like a 10-11 12-13 second short form video, you can kind of keep someone's attention better in that short period of time, are still things that you have to do when you do short form videos, in order to keep the attention of of the user or the audience. It's just easier to make the short form videos are very, very easy to make. And you have to keep things in perspective like or you have to use things that a lot of people don't talk about. Like, it's good to use your captions, it's good to make sure you fill out the description boxes properly, especially if you're using a gas a tick tock because the search feature is in Google Now if you Google certain things on your phone, you can actually see the Tick Tock videos.

Whereas Instagram is more of an inept thing. People are searching for certain things and app using the Instagram app. And you can't really see off the platform on like Google with Instagram. But obviously you can on YouTube and Google and YouTube owned by the same company, which is basically Google Google. Google owns YouTube as I hate to say it, but it's harder to keep people on the platform. If it's a longer video and there For the video is, it comes with a little more difficulty to make the video because with the longer form videos, you see a lot of the different professional or studio type quality. With those still, you still can have an iPhone or some sort of smartphone and still record longer form videos. But it's a lot easier, I guess to do it when you have a thing such as a smartphone than a big bulky camera.

But all in all, in my opinion, I think short form content is a much better, much better piece of content to make right now. Now for the long term, I would say longer form content. And that's because you can find it and I'm like I say when I'm saying longer form. I'm speaking more in terms of YouTube. Because the search functionality, people search for things for how to how to do things and a whole bunch of other different things. I think the ROI long term, longer term can be more of us than short form content. But I think all if you can somehow use both of them, you can't go wrong. Right now. It's short form content. Because of the way the algorithms are also the way the algorithms are on places like tick tock places like YouTube with the shorts feature, and even histogram reels right now. But it's up to you plan on what type of content you want to put out as well.

What what is your audience responding to what I respond in a short form? are they responding to longer fall? That's pretty much going to be your answer right there. Your audience is gonna let you know what they like, always go into your analytics on these platforms. Also going to the analytics and see what your audience is, is saying, you know, see what they're saying in the comments when they're engaging with the content, but see what they're saying in terms of what what are the numbers telling you in analytics, that's going to give you far more answers than anything, what people are saying in the comments, and the analytics.

So make sure if people are comment, make sure that you are commenting back. That's very important also, and I think that's underrated. It's very underrated always respond. And it's cool to respond with the answer because you want to keep that conversation going. You want to keep most of those comments. You want to keep most of those comments going because our that particular platform will push your content out to more people when you have more content because we have more comments, because we got to see that people are engaging with your content. If you can find a way to use both use both.
